“Dancing Lilies” is an example of my painting simply with tube/oil paint and palette knives, and I love how this tool provides me with an added freedom of expression, as I carve and shape the paint on the canvas. It is now my preferred method of painting en plein air, as I can show up with about a dozen tubes of paint and one palette knife, and I force myself to have my painting completed in about an hour. When painting en plein air, it is best to look at the scene for the first 20 minutes or so of the paining process, and then Stop Looking – and just paint from recent memory – as the shadows will have changed so dramatically.
